Bivy Stick vs Bivy Stick MESH
The Bivy MESH and the original Bivy Stick (the standard Bivy Stick) are both satellite communication devices, designed for two-way messaging, GPS tracking, SOS alerts, and off-grid use via the Iridium satellite network. They pair with a smartphone app for texting (app-to-app, SMS, email), location sharing, weather updates, and emergency features.
The key differences stem from the MESH version being an upgraded, next-generation model with added capabilities:
- Mesh Networking (LoRa®-enabled): The original Bivy Stick relies solely on satellite communication. The Bivy Stick MESH adds intelligent LoRa mesh radio technology, allowing devices to communicate directly with each other (device-to-device) and relay messages through nearby units in a decentralized network. This extends range, improves reliability in areas with poor satellite view (e.g., dense forests, canyons, or indoors), bypasses obstacles, and enables faster local messaging—even without satellite or cellular coverage. It's especially useful for groups traveling together.
Both maintain core features like global Iridium coverage, no need for pointing the device precisely at satellites (unlike some phone-based options), and compatibility with the same app. The MESH is essentially the "upgraded" version for better group coordination and redundancy in remote areas.
Keep in mind that in order to use the LoRa Radio feature in the Bivy MESH, you must have another Bivy MESH device to communicate with.
